I’ve been waiting for this day for 5 years now. The first day at CSM, my dream university.

Today, we started off with a small group project. Something fun that let us loose.

We were put in a group of 4 people and were asked to get to know each other and get to know the things we had in common so that later on we would create a product or a character based on the things we had in common.

I found that pretty exciting, because somehow we were multitasking:

We made friends,

Got to know them

And made a piece of art.

After presenting this first group project, we moved on to something a little bit more serious:

We were put in a group of 3, for an “ideas factory”

The ideas factory consists of learning how to develop strategies for research, conceptual thinking and processes using 3 elements only:

A material, a process and an ISM.

My group and I got respectively water, expand and utopianism.

We first started brainstorming and started writing words that would pop up in our minds when we think about each of the elements.

Then we processed to visualize these ideas on paper individually.

Later on, we visually combined the material and the process to create an idea.

The final outcome was to associate that idea to the -ISM.

I personally think that this project was a great way to start the course.

It was an introduction to a year full of research.

I think that, at the end of my first day, I got out of class with a different vision of art and of what it should be.

The ideas factory pushed me to think outside the box, it pushed me to combine things that I would never think of combining.

It pushed me to think in a crazier way, to accept the strange ideas that cross my mind, even if sometimes they don’t make sense in real life.

I think this project thought me how to think when it comes to a project.

To always have a source of inspiration, to link each idea to the other.

This project was tough, but it made me challenge myself to think harder and weirder.

And that’s the most important outcome, to learn how to challenge yourself and to always be better than what you were before.
