Pretty streets in Beirut

When I finally decided that my second outcome was going to be a publication that portrays Arab artists and their street art and graffiti around the Arab world, I started with a primary research that involved looking and reading articles about the streets in specific Arab countries, what's beautiful about them etc...

This article was one of my first primary research and one the very first articles I read about this matter

What makes a street beautiful? The question is completely subjective of course, it depends on what you prefer. It could be colorful street art, a sma

rt use of green space, or something as simple as kids playing on that very street. Certainly, Beirut has no shortage of pretty streets with each part of the city boasting its own unique charm, but here are five streets that caught our eye.

SCENE ARABIA

Art in the Arab world

Not long ago, up until the Arab Spring revolutions and the surrounding wars, Egypt, Lebanon, and Syria were often considered the patron countries of Middle Eastern art. Most of the region’s prominent museums of modern art existed in those nations. Masters from all over the world picked up their brushes and tools, enjoying year round sunshine and cheap living costs. People came to apprentice and spread their own styles.

Learning the craft of a talented painter or sculptor is a process that takes years and requires economic and social stability, and an environment that fosters art and develops it. Without the many traveling artists from all over the Middle East and beyond, who in their wake inspire and direct artistic movements and subcultures, the aforementioned countries have failed to keep the torch ablaze.

ThrowUp NYC

ThrowUp is a magazine about street art and graffiti in New York City. This was my final project for my Publication Design class. I wanted this magazine to portray graffiti and street art and target the community that surrounds it.

Arab news

Other articles that I read are also graffiti articles about the best street artists in the Arab world.

This article was lie a starting point for me to see which artists I wanted to include in my publication.

The artists featured in this article are one of the best, and it was said that they were changing urban landscape.

PUBLICATION DESIGN INSPO

I looked at these publication as an inspiration for designing the book cover of mine. I wanted an Arabic modern design that reflected colors and joy.

GRAFFITI PHOTOGRAPHERS UNITED

The artists which take part at the project “Graffiti Photographers United” proudly present their first picture book. With their artworks, they are illustrating their point of view on graffiti-scene. The places of origin reflect the different perspectives of each of them and contain several citys and countries.

R&K

Beirut City Guide

Since my initial idea was brought from the publication I saw at the library and the New York guide, I thought why not research a beirut guide and see if there is something useful that I can use for my project.

Beirut feels impossible, but there it sits. For thousands of years, peoples on this promontory between the Mediterranean and Mount Lebanon have survived earthquakes, tidal waves, fires, plagues, famines, wars, assassinations, occupations, and techno. They’ve also, somehow, survived each other. All the while, they’ve kept Beirut’s flame alive, guarding the chaos that creates—allows for?—cosmopolitanism. Come, join in and see what this splendid mess has to offer.

THE GUARDIAN

This article was also part of my primary research looking at other graffiti and their location and history

After visiting the new museums, rather than follow guidebook recommendations for the luxury downtown area, take a tour of the more bohemian quarters popping up: Badaro, Mar Mikhael and Gemmayzeh.

CONTEXTUALIZING

After I finished designing my publication, I wanted to contextualize it in a way that people can see it properly and see some of the pages inside it as well as the book cover.

Fearless graphic design, editorial layouts that make stories burst off the page, and compelling visual storytelling every bit as bold as the journalism.
