500 word evaluation

At the beginning of Unit 7, I wrote my personal project proposal aiming to introduce the Arabic society to the public from a different perspective. I believe, in general, I did achieve what I set out to do as I did introduce the Arabic society to the public. My idea was to work on this project in a conceptual way but instead, I ended up working in a straightforward way by discussing stereotypes, education and language. I feel like I could have worked in a more conceptual depth throughout my project. I explored the “Arabic society” well in some ways and no so well in others. Per example, I deeply explored the Arabic language and the way I can help people use it without knowing the language but I looked so much less at the history of the Arabic calligraphy and the Islamic patterns. initially did intend to look at the history of the Arabic society but the project went more in the direction of providing easy services with Arabic language and education. Therefore, I wouldn’t really say that my project changed from what I initially proposed, it just shifted to a different sub-theme.

Research was crucial to my project. It helped me discover what people thought about the Arab world so I could work on stereotypes. It also helped me discover the artist we had in the Arab world and discover a lot about calligraphy and patterns that I did not know of. My research influenced my designs in a good way. It helped me get inspired by patterns and calligraphy styles that I saw which developed my work into a better one.

I think one of the most successful aspects of my project was contextualizing my outcomes and creating a location for them. I think it is very important as a graphic designer to think about the location of your work because we are communicators and as communicators, our work often does not belong in a gallery. This is why I have thought of this part carefully after every outcome.

I would say that the least successful aspect of my project was the time management during the whole unit 7 period. I did get everything done in time but I feel like time was always pressuring me because I was leaving everything till last minute. If I had managed my time better, my outcomes would have been better.

Looking back at my projects, I think I would have given myself the opportunity to study the Arabic society as a history in more depths. I would have researched famous Arabic calligraphers and the way calligraphy is used in architecture, fashion etc. I think this part of my project is also very interesting to look at.

In conclusion, I am fairly satisfied by the way my portfolio was constructed and the way it is now. I am also convinced by my work and by the fact that I put my best in all my work.
